Yor Are a genius!
Ever wonder how you can think a delivery not a drive-thru?

땅이 넓은 미국에서는  소위 Take-out in the car 가 가능한 Drive-thru는 있지만, 가정으로 직접 배달해주는 Delivery system은 아직 갖춰지지 않았습니다.

Arirang TV 'Heart to Heart'

Arirang TV 'Heart to Heart'

Arirang TV 'Heart to Heart'

Arirang TV 'Heart to Heart'

Arirang TV 'Heart to Heart'

Changing the conventional image of hanbok

Forbes’ 30 Under 30 2017 Asia

Tradition combined with modernity

The “coyness” series captures Koreans’ love of K-pop

It will act as an easy and interesting window into Korea for those who hope to better understand the country.

Today’s guest Kim Hyun-jung

This is Heart to Heart, where every week

we welcome different guests for engaging conversations.

Today, we’re joined by Korean painter Kim Hyun-jung who breaks conventions

With her artistry inspired by hanbok, Korean traditional clothing.

Hello and welcome.

Would you like to say hello to our viewers?

Hello, this is Korean painter Kim Hyun-jung who is nicknamed the idol of Korean painting.

Coyness is the main theme of my artistry, and my painting feature a girl dressed in hanbok,

like a 21st-century version of Korean traditional genre painting.

Welcome to our show, and thank you very much for being with us today.

You’re wearing a beautiful hanbok today and briefly mentioned that coyness is the central theme of your artistry.

We’re going to talk more about coyness in just a moment along with your activities as an artist,

but let’s first talk about Forbes’ “30 Under 30 2017 Asia”

that you were included in last year with singer Jessica and soccer player Son Heung-min.

This accomplishment brought you both media and critical attention.

What were the criteria to qualify for “30 Under 30 2017 Asia”?

I didn’t know the criteria because I received an email that I had been chosen as a finalist for

Forbes “30 Under 30 30 Asia.”

But apparently about 1,000 candidates in Asia were selected,

and then voting was done internally by a judging panel to determine the finalists.

I discovered that I had made it to the list as they sent me a list of questions to answer.

I was pleasantly surprised and grateful for the honor. I didn’t expect to receive such an award for the pieces I’m created.

I think they gave me credit for the impact I’m having on the Korean art scene.

Despite the fact that female students outnumber male students in university in Korea,

male artists receive more attention in the professional field.

Therefore, I believe I received recognition for the path I’m paving for aspiring female artists.

I’m sure our viewers would love to see your artworks that captured the world’s attention.

We’ve prepared a video clip to show some of your amazing art.

Let’s a look

Unimaginable freedom in elegant hanbok

Tradition meets modernity

I heard that you held a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,

which is one of the world’s three major art museums.

Can you tell us about the exhibition and the pieces you displayed?

I displayed about 30 of my major pieces at my solo exhibition.

The exhibition was part of a big cultural event that was held to promote Korean culture in the U.S.

 in celebration of Korean-American Day.

Therefore, I was chosen as an artist representing Korean painting along with a musician,

dancer and other representatives from various fields for this cultural event.

The prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art

Offers a Witty gateway into Korean culture

Actually, I have an interesting story. I have a piece named “You Make Me Ride”,

which portrays a young lady riding a motorcycle to deliver fast food.

After seeing the piece, one foreign audience member praised me, calling me a genius.

I asked what made him think I was a genius, and he said,

“I know there are drive-thru restaurants, but how on earth did you think of delivering hamburgers?”

I pondered whether I should remain a genius artist from Korea or tell about the amazing delivery service in Korea.

After three seconds, I told him that Korea has a fantastic domestic express delivery service.

We have many apps dedicated to delivering food,

and parcels are delivered by the next day anywhere within the country.

Therefore, I ended up telling him about Korea’s outstanding delivery and transportation services.

I personally find it amusing that people get to see a glimpse of Korean culture through my artworks.

K-pop and K-dramas are very popular all over the world these days.

and I believe their immense popularity speaks to the world’s interest and curiosity in Korean culture.

My pieces display interesting elements of Korean culture.

Which I think is why they are well received overseas.

They must have found it very interesting.

And I’m sure you received a favorable response from the audience of that exhibition. Now, in traditional Korean paintings, ladies in hanbok are usually portrayed in a very graceful and elegant way.

However, the lady in your piece is definitely going against the norm.

and that certainly leads foreign audiences to perceive your artistry as novel and shocking.

How did you come up with that idea?

In the beginning, I created those pieces to cope with depression.

I suffered from severe depression and decided to vent my feelings through painting.

But as you can now, my painting have become much brighter and I am much happier.

So now, I’m trying to incorporate a lot of witty elements into my artworks.

With the hope that audiences feel my happy energy.

I really do try to feature amusing elements regardless of what I create.

There are many reasons why I chose to draw a lady in hanbok.

Today, it’s not hard to see people wearing hanbok in daily life.

But when I came up with this concept back in the day, they were only for weddings or traditional holidays.

Nonetheless, I was still a passionate hanbok lover and wore the clothing in daily life.

So my love for hanbok was one reason.

Second, I always had many non-Korean friends and didn’t want to give them presents

that they could easily get in their home countries.

That made me wonder what was unique to Korea.

This was another reason. Last but not least, painting was the process of healing the wounds in my heart.

This process made me realize and acknowledge that I was becoming that which I detested.

Because I was deeply hurt by two- faced people, I ended up drawing someone who wears graceful garments but acts the opposite way. Then I realized that I was like the drawing. I wasn’t a very stable person, either.

I felt that I was hurt more and hated them more because they resembled me. That process really healed my wounds,

and I wanted to express it in my artistry.

I heard you are the protagonist or the model of your own pieces.

Talking about your artistry, we cannot forget about the “Coyness” series.

This series is so famous and popular that many consider it synonymous with artist Kim Hyun-jung.

Since it’s your most representative series to date. I’m sure put a considerable amount of time, choosing the concept.

The title itself is interesting. How did you come up with the title “Coyness”?

In fact, I thought “gaze” was a fitting title for the series because the whole thing was inspired by the emotions

I felt when people would stare at me and the fact that I still cared.

However, I then thought the word “gaze” sounded a bit too serious and that I wanted people to laugh,

despite their though lives, when watching my pieces.

While thinking about a wittier title, I found the word “coyness.”

I thought coyness might be a unique sentiment of Korean culture.

During my exhibition in Berlin, Germany, one audience member asked why this lady had to be coy.

It was very difficult to answer.

Therefore, I had to explain that Confucianism is deeply rooted in Korean culture and fact

that we have to be coy at times to perform the ultimate courtesy in Korea.

For example, let’s say I’m on a date with my crush and pretend to eat only a small amount because

I want him to find me feminine and believe that all eat is salad when my stomach is growing from hunger.

Then the guy would think. ‘is she trying to make a good impression?’ and ‘that’s cute,’ rather than

‘why is she lying to me?’ I’d say coyness is like a white lie to make a better impression on others.

Nos I clearly understand what you’re trying to express. There’s another thing we need to focus on in your artistry. In Western art, there’s a technique called collage. While there is a genre named ink and light color painting in Oriental painting. These things are combined beautifully in your works. Can you tell us about it?

The “Coyness” series is all about fusing different elements,

It provides a stark contrast between tradition and modernity through hanbok and modern props as well as a combination of a Western technique and a Korean traditional painting style.

Collage refers to the act of “adhering,” so it is an artistic composition glued on a surface.

It’s also one of the techniques that shaped the Western visual arts in the 20th century.

Meanwhile, ink and light dolor painting refers to a type of brush painting that uses black ink in various concentrations. People are often confused about the difference between Oriental and Korean painting.

But Oriental painting is a branch of art classification referring to the painting styles of Korea, China, and Japan.

Each country has its own characteristics, I can go days to describe the differences, but to put it simply.

China has a long history of ink while japan has a long history of coloring.

As for Korea, because it’s located between the two countries,

it has a long history of using ink and light coloring techniques.

The famous Kim Hong-do and Sin Yun-bok also created ink and light color paintings.

I hope people recognize that my pieces combine both Korean traditional and Western elements.

On the surface, your pieces look like ordinary paintings,

On the surface, your pieces look like ordinary paintings, but as you mentioned,

they actually feature collages composed of different materials adhered on the canvases.

Did you that technique to create hanbok?

That’s right.

I initially drew my hanbok, but it gave me a hard time, depicting it’s unique uneven texture using paints.

But it gave me a hard time, depicting its unique, uneven texture using paints.

Whilst looking for a better way of depicting the fabric texture. I came to think that the properties of hanbok

fabric are very similar to those hanji, Korean traditional paper.

Then I started using the material for the hanbok.

In fact, only those who have seen my pieces in person know that they feature collage parts.

My pieces would look like ordinary paintings through TV or computer screens.

As a painter, I’d like to draw more people to come and enjoy my works.

So I incorporated those special elements for my audiences as a way of attracting more people.

Now I’m totally convinced that we must see your works personally.

Yes, please.

Now I’m really curious about how you create your pieces.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks that way. I heard our production crew caught up with you in your studio.

Let’s take a look at that video footage to see how you create your artworks.

So, I always simulate the image in my head.

I drew it on a sheet of A4 paper.

This is to see which lines would look best.

I look at a photo like this as I draw.

They look quite similar, don’t they?

After a basic sketch, I need to draw hanbok, so I take a photo of myself in a hanbok in a similar pose.

My biggest worry when I began my career as an artist…

I was worried that I might end up a lonely artist who received no attention.

I feel lonely at times, but, social media allows me to interact with you anytime and makes me feel loved.

It’s good that I can share my pieces with you in other ways than just exhibitions.

Draws her inspiration from the public.

You wore a beautiful hanbok in the video just like the beautiful lady in your artworks.

You previously mentioned that you wear hanbok in daily life. but how often do you wear it?

I think I wear hanbok about three days a week on average, which is quite a lot.

It was pretty uncomfortable in the beginning because I had never worn the garments in daily life,

but now it’s like my uniform.

I also enjoy choosing the colors of my hanbok for the day.

Another good thing is that I don’t need to care about losing weight.

The long, wide skirt can be inconvenient at times, but it allows me to worry less about my posture when sitting down.

I can even sit cross-legged in a hanbok skirt.

It restricts me also sets me free at the same time.

To be honest, I didn’t wear hanbok at the beginning of my career.

It was just a part of my artistry.

Therefore, I only knew which direction I should tie the hanbok bow, or goreum, but not the skirt.

Then, someone pointed out that the way I tied the skirt symbolized gisaeng, or female artists in the Joseon dynasty,

I felt ashamed that I hardly knew anything about what I was drawing.

Therefore, I decided to wear them as often as I could to learn everything about our garments.

As for the direction of tying skirts, there is a very easy way of memorizing it. The gentry tied their skirts clockwise,

but gisaeng tired them counterclockwise.

I’ve discovered a very important thing,

Thank you very much.

It’s something that I have never been aware of.

Now, I took a look at your educational background and found out that you studied business

while majoring in Oriental painting at Seoul National University.

What made you study business as an art major?

I teach at university these days. but when I ask,

“How many of you want be a painter?”

only about 10% of them raise their hands.

I then ask, “You are here because you love painting, but why don’t you want to be one?”

Then they immediately say,

“There’s no money in painting.”

 I totally understand them.

Who would love to be poor in this world?

I also had that question when I first decided to become a painter.

Paintings are very expensive, but why don’t artists make any money?

That’s why I chose to study business.

Thanks to your open mind, perhaps, you have many titles to your name.

To list a few. You’re dubbed the “idol of Korean painting,” an “ink and light color painter in the 21st century,”

and a “hop Korean painter.”

Which one is your favorite, and how do you want to be remembered?

It’s a very difficult question.

I have a very common name, Kim Hyun-Jung. There’s a famous singer with the same name and a producer as well.

I think my name was very popular at around the time I was born.

Back in my school days, when someone called my name, “Hyun-jung,” it often turned out to be someone else, not me.

There were Kim Hyun-Jung. Lee Hyun-jung, Park Hyun-Jung, Han Hyun-jung, and so on.

I thought my name was not unique enough,

but I didn’t want to use a nickname because I cherished the name my parents gave me.

Then I was gradually given many different nicknames while pursuing my career and am grateful

for each and every one of them.

It’s hard to pick one, to be honest. I sometimes even think that I just want people to remember me.

Also, if I were asked what kind of artist I want to be remembered as,

I’d say an artist who works very hard and never hesitates to express her feelings.

You always try hard to interact with the public for your artistry,

and I admire how you try to impress them with your endless creativity.

I wish you the best of luck in your career.

Thank you very much for being with us today. Thank you.

Thank you.
