Hello, CultureM Magazine viewers.
I am a Korean painter, Kim Hyun Jung.
Nice to meet you.
Q) There are something special things
in ‘Feign Amusement Park’
This is my 10th solo exhibition.
This is the exhibition where I can see
how hard I have been working and how my work has improved
through each exhibition
since my first exhibition.
The difference between this exhibition
and the previous Feign exhibitions is that this is the biggest one I have had for
there are about 100 paintings here.
There are more paintings of feign series where it came from, but this is the first
time I exhibit 100 some paintings
in one place. So this is the biggest so far.
The second difference is this is
the first exhibition in Korea to have
the artist to record and provide
the audio guide for the visitors.
The advantage of living in the same
era is that I can have the privilege to hear the visitors’ opinion in person
as the visitors can also here
how an artist has come about her work.
Though I was quite shy about my voice,
I did my best to record the audio guide
of each of my painting.
The third difference is there are
many activities in the gallery.
There is a coloring post card table.
You can see the drawing version of
my painting and visitors can
color the drawings themselves and
create something different on their own. Another activity is the toy
vending machine.
I used to play with this toy at a stationary store when I was a kid so
I hope the visitors can enjoy this and
reminiscent the memory as well.
There is no losing ticket so you can
simply enjoy the thrill of winning a lottery without the risk of losing.
Also since the exhibition is held in
a 4 story building,
by the time people get to
the third or fourth floor,
they start to run out of breath.
So Miero Fiber sponsored drinks for
the visitors to quench their thirst and
take their time with the exhibition.
I have prepared an exhibition
that stimulates your all-5 senses
so I hope you can enjoy it.
Q) The paintings that represents
the exhibition
If I may introduce a few
most interesting paintings
in the exhibition,
the first one is called
‘Sampo Generation, Miss Kim’.
This is kind of self-portrait
or our generation’s portrait
who has given up 3 main things
in order to simply charge
forward like a bull.
The popcorn and movie tickets
represent relationship,
the wooden ducks and ring represents
marriage and the baby bottle
represents childcare.
You can also see a company employee
pass.
So this interesting painting is a representation of how we only work
so hard as the fluttering employee pass
from the neck represents
but other objects representing
what we are giving up in
life are flying away.
The next paintings are
about women’s stress:
being on diet.
It is called ‘New Year’s resolution
(feat Starting Tomorrow)’.
I tell myself everyday that
I need to go on diet with sigh
and I buy greens for salad every time
I go to a supermarket then
I end up eating all the fattening
food right in front of the fridge.
So it is a portrait of how I have to make
the resolution over and over everyday.
This painting is about the time
when I step on a scale,
I strip down to my underwear in order to see even a gram off of a scale.
There are also some series
that reinterpret Disney princesses
with modern perspective.
I wondered if Snow White were born
in modern time,
how would her life be.
I also thought Cinderella
could be an amazing storyteller
who mesmerizes people
with a story about a shoe.
I also thought ‘Is Beauty from
‘The Beauty and the Beast’ truly kind?’
These are the thoughts behind
Disney series.
Q) The feign lady goes out into the
world
I have the solo exhibition at the
‘Gallery IS’ throughout April in 2016.
In May, I have a plan to hold a solo
exhibition at the culture center of
Korean Embassy in Berlin.
I will have dual exhibitions with
Paik Nam June at the
Long Island museum in New York and
Newark Museum too.
I hope to continue my projects
in Korea as I also organize
many exhibitions to resonate
the beauty of Korea to the world.
